Welcome to Slimbridge Local History Society

Our aim is to promote and encourage the study of the history of the parish of Slimbridge in Gloucestershire. We do this by presenting relevant, entertaining and informative presentations and outings.

Since 2020 we’ve been uncovering the evidence of Iron Age and Roman settlements from two thousand years ago on the edge of the village. And if you’d like to get involved in hands-on history, come and spend a day (or two) at the archaeological dig.

We have recently unearthed artefacts of international importance. So this is your chance to contribute to a project that could change the story of the Roman occupation of this part of the country. Details about the project, and how you can take part in a dig, are under the Archaeological Project tab on the drop down menu above.

You don’t have to be a member to come to a dig, but if you’d like to join the society, membership is open to all, whether parishioners or from anywhere else in the world. We keep our members informed of news and events on through this website, our Facebook page and by regular emails. Membership is on an annual calendar year basis and allows free entry to presentations and unlimited access to our online archives.

The parish has a rich history at the centre of which is the magnificent 12th century church of St John the Evangelist.
