Soldiers, sailors and airmen of World War 2 - Read this first

Taking place on

The society has been researching all the men on the war memorial and, up until now, the focus has been very much on those who fell in World War 1. With the anniversary of VE Day coming at such a difficult time we felt we should make our work on those who fell in World War 2 available. The work began over 20 years ago and has resulted in the six stories you will find below.

The stories of how these men fell are a mixture of simple bad luck, extreme bravery and for one at least, terrible lasting mental terror. We will at some time in the future give a talk on these six men. For now, research continues and leads are sought of living relatives who may be able to help.

We give huge credit to our predecessors in the society for setting the scene and to Pamela Storey and Neil Howarth who have achieved so much with their diligent and dedicated research.
