We set out to raise money for two projects this year. A fitting headstone for a soldier buried, but not commemorated in the graveyard, and a WWI Roll of Honour to be mounted in the village hall. We recently raised over £1000 to commission the headstone and we also raised £1300 to have the roll of honour produced by a signwriter. The £1300 was a combination of £200 from the society and £1100 from the solar fund by way of a grant.
The headstone will be erected later today, 21 November, and you will be able to see it next to the field gate in the corner of the graveyard where George Shipway was buried.
An oak faced board will be prepared by Alan Smith and sent to the signwriter, Simon Lloyd, over the next couple of weeks so I would hope you will be able to see it in the new year.
We owe everyone who contributed to these two funds an enormous vote of thanks. The society committee put in countless hours of research on both projects and then followed that up with lots of work to stage the fundraising events. You can see all of them on this website. I hope I don’t forget anyone, but thanks go to Becky Street, Bill Boon, David Carrington, Jackie Lantelli and Gareth Williams and the Jenner Quartette for their generous support. We couldn’t have done without you and all our members whose membership fees support the society. Thank you
